Chant of the Month AUM 9

AUM is the companion of Sanatan Dharma

The history of our Dharma is a grim reminder of our passing years. All this is recorded in the Vedas, which also tells us that OM is the sound incarnation of Brahman.

  •          Aitareya Brahmanam discusses the formation of “Om”

·        Chandogya Upanishad advises us to meditate on “Om”

·        Mandukya Upanishad (12 mantra - the shortest but most profound) is fully about discussions on “Om” and the significance of each akshara, the bindu, and the great silence.

·        KaTa, Mundaka, Svetaashvataara, Maitrayaniya, etc. Upanishads discuss “Om” - thus all Veda discusses “Om”

·        In the longer “Gayatri mantra” - the “deergha vyaahrti” - ओम् भूः ओम् भुवः ओम् सुवः ओम् महः ओम् जनः ओम् तपः ओम् सत्यम् - means verily the “Om” is all the 7 loka.

·        Bhagavadgita discusses “Om” on many occasions - “Pranavah sarva vedeshu…”, “Om ityekaaksharam brahma…”, “Om tatsat iti…”, “Pavitram ‘Om’kaara…”, etc.

·        Yoga-sutra, Itihaasa, Puarana - in these in many places there are discussions “Om”

·        Yoga-vashista, HaTayoga texts, Smriti, all Acharyas - like this everything revers /discusses “Om”

·        In all “dhaarmika” religions (Sanaatana, Bauddha, Jaina, Sikha) - “Om” is, revered as it is.
