Chant of the Month AUM 14

AUM with Yoga

  • If you've attended a yoga class before, you've probably been led through a round or two of "Om" chanting at the beginning or end. Unless you practice Sanatan Dharma, that might be your only experience with Om, but it's actually a sacred symbol and syllable. And yes — its significance extends far beyond any boutique yoga class.
  • The benefits of chanting AUM and yoga is well backed by medical science. Since the beginning of this universe, AUM has been used as the first aid to cure diseases. If you are a believer of science and think that there is no way AUM sound can do anything to the soul and body, then think once again.
  • Infrasound and ultrasound are used in the cure of many diseases. Ultrasound frequencies above 20 kHz are used to cure kidney stones and tumors. It is chanted as the daily dose for a peaceful mind and body by spiritual aspirants. "Brahmvarchas Shodh Sansthan" is the leading research center on spiritual science that has carried out several experiments to study the healing of diseases by chanting mantras.

How to practice AUM meditation

  • Sit in a comfortable meditation posture with dignity and ease.
  • Take 3 deep breaths to interiorize your awareness.
  • On your next exhale (out-breath), chant AUM slowly.  Pronounce each syllable ‘A’, ‘U’, and ‘M’, with a gradual transition from one to another. Read more on the pronunciation guide here.
  • Notice the silence and lingering vibration in your body during the inhale between two repetitions of AUM chanting.
  • While chanting you can focus on the vibrations created by your voice or on the space between your eyebrows or at your heart center.
  • Try to be completely aware of the sound of AUM. Feel as though your whole body and mind is resonating in harmony with the sound.
  • You can chant aloud for 12, 24, 36,…or 108, then transition to mentally chant AUM while bringing all your attention to the space between your eyebrows.
  • When you feel a pulse-like sensation at the eyebrow center synchronize it with the mental sound of AUM.
  • Continue in this manner for as long as you have time.
  • End practice by chanting AUM loudly 3 times.

Aum chanting Sadhana is very simple. You need to chant Aum 21 or 108 times (or for a longer period for intense Sadhana) with closed eyes and keep the focus on the inner vibration. It is critical that we chant it in the right manner.
