Chant of the Month AUM 11

Mandukya Upanishad

  • Mandukya Upanishad. Om (pronounced: AUM) is the symbol of the highest truth, the Brahman. Is also the symbol for the three states of consciousness (jagriti, svapna, susupti), with the fourth transcendent state thuriya (bindi) being veiled by maya (chandra).
  • The monosyllabic word, ‘Om’ is the Brahman.
  • This closes the pronunciation of AUM just as deep sleep is the final stage of the mind at rest. Whenever AUM is recited in succession there is an inevitable period of silence between two successive AUM’s. This silence represents the “fourth state” known as “Turiya” which is the state of perfect bliss when the individual self recognizes his identity with the supreme.
  • The symbol OM visually consists of three curves, one semicircle, and a dot.
  • The large bottom curve symbolizes the waking state, A.
  • The middle curve signifies the dream state, U.
  • The upper curve denotes the state of deep sleep, M.
  • The dot signifies the fourth state of consciousness, Turiya.
  • The semi-circle at the top represents Maya and separates the dot from the other three curves. It signals to us that it is the illusion of Maya that is an obstacle to the realization of the Highest

Note the difference, Brahma is referred to as "The Creator" within the Trimurti,

Brahman as the ultimate reality of one 'Supreme Spirit'
